Maldives facts

Maldives is an Indian Ocean archipelago spanning the equator, with 1,192 low-lying coral islands (only 187 inhabited) grouped into atolls. The country has a population of around 560,000, with the capital in Malé. The official language is Dhivehi, although most government officials speak English, and the religion is Sunni Muslim. Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, and the economy is mainly based on tourism, boat building, and fishing. The national tree is of course, a coconut palm!
